Nico Loureiro (Honours B.A. Sport Management, ‘11) is a man with a plan. A member of the 2007-08 Brock Men's Basketball National Championship team, Loureiro has leveraged his passion for the sport into a career path in coaching. Combined with extensive involvement during his tenure at Brock University, Loureiro has networked his skills and eagerness to learn into a string of positions and internships that have taken him around the globe.
Since the 2007-08 Championship season, Loureiro began working in Basketball camps, gaining experience as a coach at the Olympia Sports Camp (U-15 and U-17 players) in Muskoka, as well as locally with the Nike U-13 Girls Regional Training Centre Program with the Ontario Basketball Association.
His experience with the Ontario Basketball Association led to two seasons as the Intern Team Manager/Strength and Conditioning Trainer with the Ontario U-15 Boys Basketball team.
Other responsibilities included an international flair, undoubtedly helped by Loureiro's fluency in Spanish, organizing the team's training trips to Argentina in 2010 and to Brazil in 2011. The Ontario U-15 team won back-to-back Canadian Championships in those seasons.
As a Sports Management student, Loureiro went to the 2010 NCAA Division I Mountain West Conference Championships in 2010, as well as two rounds of the 2011 March Madness tournament as a media operations and Brock volunteers representative. Loureiro volunteered his time and energy with Brock's Special Needs Activities Program (SNAP), as well as Solidarity Experiences Abroad (SEA).
With SNAP, Loureiro worked with the Fundraising and Communications Committee, as well as serving as a Volunteer Coordinator.
With the SEA program, he traveled to Rio de Janeiro to lead a charity sports camp in May 2010. Due to its success, Loureiro was asked to work with the Sports Management department to develop curriculum and logistics for SPMA 4P93, Sport for Development Field Experience. In 2012 he was chosen as a trip leader for the class trip to Peru. Also on campus, Loureiro worked at The Zone as a personal trainer and an Assistant Coach on the Women's Basketball team.
Nico's success has come from not only his ability to network himself and his skill sets, but also through a dedication of his time to learn how Basketball organizations operate from both a coaching and management perspective.
Loureiro travelled to Italy to shadow the Olimpia Milano Armani Jeans professional teams, including youth divisions. He also attended the Nike Championship Basketball Clinics in May to learn from over a dozen NCAA Division I coaches. In August he was able to shadow the Spanish Senior Men's National team in Madrid. Through this trip, Loureiro got the opportunity to learn from former FIBA World Champion Sergio Scariolo and the NBA duo of Pau and Marc Gasol.
Loureiro has invested in his professional development training through the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP), passing the program's first two Practical and Technical levels. He is also a CAN-FIT-PRO certified Personal Trainer Specialist.
In 2009, Loureiro was able to secure a Summer Company Student Grant from the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (MEDT) to found Northern Star Basketball Academy in his home town of Sault Ste. Marie, ON.
He is currently in Montreal working as an Assistant Coach for Brébeuf Junior College (CEGEP), and plans to organize a professional coaching development trip to Milano, Italy for coaches and managers to visit European professional basketball organizations. Loureiro has also kept his ties with Brock through the SPMA department.
This is an impressive example of what passion, drive and a Brock degree can do for you.
