This February, BUSU is looking to make Brock more environmentally conscious by starting new "Go Green" initiatives.

The Brock University Students' Union (BUSU) will be asking students to share their ideas of potential new green initiatives to start at Brock. Students are asked to create a short video, approximately two minutes in length, outlining a green initiative they believe Brock should implement. These videos will then be voted on by students, and the top three finalists will be given an opportunity to present their idea in front of a panel of judges, who will ultimately decide which Go Green initiative should be implemented. The online submission page opened on Feb. 1, and will be open for students to upload their videos until Feb. 29.

"This is a way of listening to the students and actually hearing about what they want to see changed in their University," said Emma Bulpin, BUSU's Marketing Coordinator. "We're creating awareness about how to make such a large organization be more environmentally friendly."

For those students who do not own a video camera, BUSU will have a video camera set up and will be recording students' Go Green ideas in Mackenzie Chown. BUSU will also be organized in Mackenzie Chown A block on Feb. 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and on Feb. 9 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to record students. If students are unable to make these times, but still would like their idea to be recorded, they are encouraged to contact BUSU who will be happy to arrange a time when they can be filmed.

Once videos have been uploaded, students can vote on which initiative they would like to see implemented. From there, three finalists will be decided and will be given the chance to present their idea to BUSU's Environmental Committee. The finalists will be announced and will present to the judges at the beginning of March. The BUSU Environmental Committee was formed through the amalgamation of different environmental groups on campus. The Environmental Committee will ultimately decide which initiative to support, however every idea will still be addressed.

"We have these ideas now forever with us, so we can implement them when we can," said Bulpin.

The student whose initiative is selected will then be asked to join BUSU as a Green Intern. The Green Intern will work with BUSU and the Environmental Committee to enact their initiative and other Green plans that BUSU has. Go Green was made possible by the Green Levy which was voted on and implemented in 2009. The Green Levy ensures that a portion of BUSU's funds will go towards supporting environmentally friendly initiatives at Brock.
