Brock and Haiti: how we are helping

For the past three weeks, you've most likely noticed the multiple Haiti Relief campaigns being run by different organizations. Well, it's starting to pay off. OPIRG, one of Brock's most experienced social justice and environmentally conscious research groups, has raised over $1,200 from the two bake sales they have run.

Chinese Students and Scholars Association finds home downtown

The BUCSSA's growing needs have pushed them off-campus into their new office in the heart of downtown St. Catharines. The Brock University Chinese Students and Scholars Association (BUCSSA) is one of Brock's largest clubs ratified under the Brock University Student Union (BUSU) and represents the Chinese students and scholars at Brock for either academic inquiries or social gatherings.

Blue Chair Campaign raises awareness for students' financial hardships

Without wasting any time, BUSU, in association with OUSA, has started this semester's push for student awareness of OSAP. "Each one of the empty blue chairs around campus represents a student academically qualified for university, but who cannot attend due to financial barriers placed in their way," said Rob Lanteigne, Vice President University Affairs for Brock and OUSA Board member, on the BUSU Web site.

Vegan ad vetoed by transit commission

NAfA, a registered charity staffed by volunteers, has made it their mission to reach out and educate the Niagara community on the rights of animals. The organization is run entirely on fundraising and relies heavily on community outreach. The latest project being put on by NAfA (Niagara Action for Animals) involves advertisements that promote becoming a vegan.

On Jan. 30, 62 Haitian children disembarked on an Air Canada jet and fled to the arms of their new families, despite the viciously different weather conditions in their new home country. This was the third plane of adoptive Haitian children to arrive in Ottawa since the earthquake.

One of many appealing factors of the St. Catharines Region is its decorated and surmounting arts scene. That is why, when the announcement of the Niagara Center for the Arts (NCFA) and the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts (MWSFPA) was to be located downtown, all those involved; students, staff and citizens alike, were enthusiastic about the opportunity this would pose for the furthering of the arts scene.

Fort George to undergo facelift

An extensive restoration on Fort George started about four weeks ago. Fort George is Niagara-on-the-Lake's most celebrated site and memorial for the War of 1812 and the now 80-year-old replica of the historic site is receiving $2.75 million renovations. Six cannon platforms and sections of its decaying wooden fence are being replaced to secure the outer walls of the fort and stabilize the crumbling building.

Harper names five to senate

Prime Minister Stephen Harper named a much-anticipated change to the Senate. The addition of five new senators gives the Conservatives control in the Senate, as well as the house, which will provide much greater sway over the legislative agenda. Senate additions: • Bob Runciman, former Ontario cabinet minister, appointed for Ontario • Vim Kochhar, businessman and disabled persons advocate, appointed for Ontario • Pierre-Hugues Boisvenu, victims rights activist, appointed for Quebec • Elizabeth Marshall, former provincial auditor general, appointed for Newfoundland and Labrador • Rose-May Poirier, current Conservative Member of the Legislative Assembly, appointed for New Brunswick Senate Breakdown What the 105-seat Senate will look like once the five new Senators are sworn in.

New passport requirements for Canadians entering Mexico An initiative for Mexico to match their border control policy with that of Canada and the US will require Canadians entering Mexico to have a passport beginning March 1. What this change in policy means is that Canadians will no longer be able to enter Mexico with strictly a birth certificate or Canadian citizenship certificate and a valid photo I.

Government pledges to put students to work

MONTREAL (CUP) - The Conservative government announced earlier this month that $10 million from its economic stimulus package would be transferred to the Canada Summer Jobs program, creating thousands of extra jobs for students who last summer faced the worst youth unemployment rate in 30 years.
