"I came to the realization that the best way to tell this story was to let the events unfold as they took place. And that is what I tried to do [...] to show, rather than tell what happened," said Malcolm Rogge, Toronto based director and producer of Under Rich Earth, which is exactly what he achieved.
On the evening of Friday, July 31, MOCtalk IX was filmed at the 4-Triple-5 Café and Wine Bar on downtown Queen Street in Niagara Falls. The hour-long taping was action-packed with local acts - bands, visual artists and even a magician. This ninth episode of MOCtalk, the Niagara Region's only independent talk show, proved how much the show has grown from its early days of being filmed in a tiny room of its creator's home with an audience comprised solely of those creators.
After spending some time living in New York City, recording and self-releasing their new album, Another Link in the Chain, working on their second music video and introducing a new member into the band, Brampton's The Junction have had a busy and impressive year behind them.
Prior to Metric's performance on Sept. 10, Brock students set their second world record. Amidst the lights that projected from the stage in Weather Station Field, all those in attendance participated what is now the world's largest collective air guitar performance.
Prior to the triumphant return of our usual Hi-Fi writer, Josh Learn, I've decided to include a little background article on our weekly Top-Five list. Once upon a time, Nick Hornby wrote a novel. That novel turned into a movie starring the incomparable John Cusack.
The securing of Metric for this year's O-Week concert was more promising than two years ago - this time around, Metric had a new album of songs to perform, so maybe the crowd would recognize more than four songs. That was certainly wishful thinking. Unfortunately, with the exception of those along the barricade at the front and within certain pockets of the crowd, most in attendance were either there to see the songs that Edge 102 had played furiously over the summer, or because they purchased an Access Gold Card and admission was free.
BUFS proudly kicks off the Fall 2009 season with The Hurt Locker - a "full-throttle body shock of a movie," according to Variety's Scott Foundas. Directed by mistress of action and suspense Kathryn Bigelow (Point Break, Strange Days), The Hurt Locker has gained a wide reputation as the best film to date about the Iraq War, and a very likely contender for the Oscars.
The first film from Quentin Tarantino that I had the pleasure to see was Kill Bill. The hype was tremendous and I only caught the tail end of it, seeing it on dull DVD. The real way to see any Tarantino film (hell, any film) is in theatres. The scope of everything from the images to the emotions runs so high.
For the last couple of months, I have been stressing to friends about how awesome a venue 73 is when it isn't jam packed and sweaty. When there is enough room to breathe and see the band well, there is a certain aura that fills the room that is intimate, warm and unbeatable.
