Federal deficits "a distinct possibility"

On Nov. 19, Governor General Michaƫlle Jean spent a good portion of the 45 minute-long speech from the throne talking about Canada's economy and the hard times and tough decisions that lay ahead. Speaking in the Senate chamber on the second official day of Canada's 40th session of parliament, Jean warned of changes to government spending and possible deficits in the years to come.

Industry Minister visits Washington

Federal Industry Minister Tony Clement was in Washington last week meeting with US officials and representatives from the Big Three domestic automakers on a mission to seek a solution to problems faced by the auto industry. Clement met with the three companies - GM, Chrysler and Ford - as well as politicians as he took part in a fact-finding mission to find out what actions the US is taking to help the important auto industry.

Canada's NAFTA concern

Canadians and Americans have a lot in common. This is why the Nov. 4 US presidential election, which saw Barack Obama elected to become the 44th President of the United States, was of particular interest to us. Polls in Canada indicated that were Canadians given the opportunity to vote for the next commander-in-chief, Obama would have won even more convincingly than in the US.

CRTC rules in favour of Bell

Last Thursday, the CRTC ruled in favour of the telecommunications giant, Bell Canada, by rejecting an application by the Canadian Association of Internet Providers (CAIP) to cease traffic shaping on its wholesale lines. This decision was a direct blow to the fight for net neutrality.
