In front of a ballistic Niagara crowd last Friday, assistant captain Stefan Legein and the recently relocated IceDogs set out to play their first regular season home game in their new house. Fresh off a mid-summer move from Mississauga to St. Catharines, the Dogs knew just how big the game against the St.
It was not pretty, but a win is a win. This was the resounding sentiment of both the Brock men's soccer team and their coaches after their 1-0 victory over the Waterloo Warriors at Brock last Saturday. Brock came into the game riding a three-game winning streak that had seen their overall Ontario University Athletics (OUA) record climb to 3-2-1 and fourth place in the OUA West division.
The Brock University women's hockey team finished up their two-game tournament this past weekend with a 3-2 victory over UOIT as they prepare themselves for the upcoming regular season. After dropping their first game to the Guelph Gryphons by a score of 5-1, the Badgers rebounded Sunday afternoon, nipping the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) by a goal, earning a split in the mini-tournament.
The Brock Badgers lacrosse team, disappointed by a regular season-opening loss to Western Sept. 21, got in a very good practice session the next afternoon in the annual alumni game. The day before a home game against Wilfrid Laurier, and with another crucial game against Guelph on the 29th, the alumni event allowed the Badgers to test their skills against former players who have since moved on to the National Lacrosse League (NLL) and international competition.
Last Tuesday, the Brock University Men's baseball team (6-3 OUA) won their fourth straight game, a 10-inning, 5-4 victory over the visiting McMaster Marauders. In the bottom of the 10th inning, Brock's Ivan Cherwinski walked, then was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Steve Coates.
Although the red-clad women's soccer team outplayed the Waterloo Warriors on Sept. 22, the Badgers were unable to capture the victory and instead settled for a 1-1 tie. Just a half-an-hour before taking to the field, the visiting Warriors sent echoes of loud music streaming down the halls of Walker Complex in an attempt to rev themselves up.
Brock News: After tying Waterloo 1-1 on Sept. 22 (see above), the Brock women's soccer team defeated York, 1-0, the following afternoon. For the men's soccer team it was a different story, after winning on Saturday (see page 25), the Badgers fell to York 1-0.
It was announced on Thursday that former Chicago Bull Scottie Pippen is close to signing a two-game contract with a professional basketball team - in Finland. The news comes just months after the 41-year-old former NBA superstar attempted to relaunch his career with the Los Angeles Lakers in time for the 2007 playoffs.
