By his own admission, Perry Wakulich is an odd mixture, being both an athlete and an artist. Wakulich has taught art and coached wrestling for the past decade-and-a-half at St. Catharines Collegiate, and has dedicated much of his spare time to developing his own artistic style.
From the ashes of early '90s emo heroes Braid came Hey Mercedes. After years of constant touring and numerous albums, Braid learned that having a hard work ethic can lead to exhaustion and disintegration of a group. But before Braid ended three of the members knew they were meant to find success in another form.
In the basement of the Schmon Tower this past Sunday afternoon students could be seen grooving to bossa nova beats, dining on cucumber sandwiches and drinking fine champagne. Ok, a closer look reveals that they are planning out the opening scene of The Importance of Being Earnest, set to hit the stage in just over a week, they're really gnawing away at dry white bread, and that's generic brand cola in those champagne flutes.
Walking into the theatre to see this film I must admit my concerns weren't necessarily with the plot. They didn't even wander over the line and curiously prod at what exactly the "butterfly effect" is or how interesting it could be to go back and change something you regret.
Win a day date with your favourite celebrity for one day. Sounds pretty familiar? With all those reality TV shows these days, it's a surprise that someone hasn't done this for real. Yet this does not discourage Hollywood from making a movie with this idea.
Heist films are great, and no matter what anyone says, it's hard to outgrow a good teen comedy. Knowing this, one could expect The Perfect Score to be the best movie ever. Unfortunately, it's not. It's not even close. Not to say that it's a bad movie. It's perfectly likeable.
In many ways, The Big Bounce is the perfect mid-winter movie. It is a charming, mindless caper set in an exotic locale with likable actors and lots of skin. After months of brutal cold and heady Oscar bait, a silly heist flick is just what the world needs.
