Jean-Luc Lemelin, a well liked Brock politics student, died late on Friday, Feb. 8 in an automobile accident near Montrose and Brown roads in Niagara Falls. The Welland native was 22. Cookies crumble election

A late-night decision by the Brock University Students’ Union (BUSU) elections committee about fortune cookie messages that ended up in lecture halls has disqualified four of five candidates for executive office. Mark Baseggio, Phil Haines, Brandon Larry and Brett Bergie were disqualified under BUSU bylaw 560 XII (o), which is part of the students’ unions rules covering campaigning.

General Motors announces layoffs in St. Catharines plants

One of St. Catharines’ major employers, General Motors of Canada, announced that it would be laying off 932 workers from its two St. Catharines plants, including 133 skilled tradespeople, on Monday, Feb. 4. The layoffs come from the automotive giant’s phasing out of the Gen 1E small block V-8 engine, which is manufactured at the plant on Glendale Ave.

Novice debaters finish 2nd in business competition

Phil Salmon and Dean Clark never expected to find themselves on a stage debating the finer points of a Gillette advertising campaign before an audience of rapt business students. However, on Jan. 26, that is just where Salmon, a fourth-year management student, and Clark, a recent management graduate, found themselves as they representing Brock University in the finals of the debating section of the 24th annual Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (ICBC) at Queen’s University.

B.C. tuition freeze thaws

UBC student turns grease to gas

VANCOUVER (CUP) — Most students at the University of British Columbia visit their campus pub for a quick meal or an after-class beer. Geoff Hill goes to get fuel for his car. The fourth-year environmental studies student uses vegetable-oil grease from the university’s Pit pub to make his own fuel, known as biodiesel, an environmental phenomenon that can be made at home in just a few hours.
