This year’s Emmys was a night of triumphs and losses. The evening award show is all about honouring the best of American television. As exciting as the award ceremony is, many are more concerned with who wore what. This list is entirely concerned with exactly that, who wore what, what outfits flopped and what ones shone. The following is a compilation of the Best and Worst Dressed attendees at this year’s Emmys.
In my eyes, Zendaya can do no wrong and her stunt at the Emmys is no exception. The Euphoria actress stunned in a custom-made Vera Wang emerald green corset gown paired with matching green heels. The lingerie-style dress was complemented with sparkling Cartier ice: simple earrings and a thick diamond bracelet. The former Disney Channel star wore her hair in cascading Hollywood curls paired with natural makeup. Her look was an absolute 10; it was perfect for the occasion, showcased her figure and accentuated her natural beauty while maintaining a sophisticated look. Just when I thought her look couldn’t get any better, she changed into a floral hi-low gown to match her Euphoria co-stars, who looked unified in reds, pinks and black. Zendaya easily takes the top spot on this Best Dressed list.
Emilia Clarke in Valentino Haute Couture comes in second place on this Best Dressed list. The plunging neckline and simple shape stood out among some other attendees’ dramatic looks. Clarke went for a simple yet daring vibe and nailed it. Her makeup did nothing but highlight her gorgeous smile and face. This look takes second place because of how well Valentino matched the actress to her outfit; the navy ensemble suited her perfectly and was overall a knockout.
Usually I take preference to the classic tuxedo or a suit and tie for the men at black tie events, but this year Billy Porter in the Michael Kors Collection surprised me. The wacky hat, big shoes, loose pants and scarf worked well together. This was a fun outfit that Porter rocked and I am sure winning his first Emmy helped with the confidence required to pull this look off. Third place goes to Porter for his unapologetic, unique look.
Mandy Moore in Brandon Maxwell with Forevermark jewelry was a bombshell. Pink and red seemed to be the popular colour combination of this event, but Moore pulled it off the best. The deep neckline and off-the-shoulder top with a bare neck was sexy and bold, matching the allure of the slit up the side of the skirt. This look was completely luxurious and screamed old Hollywood with a bit of a modern twist. Moore definitely deserves her spot on the Best Dressed.
Emanuela Postacchini epitomized couture done correctly. Postacchini’s look was definitely underrated at this year’s Emmys. The fit of the dress was stunning with the right amount of uniqueness. The large shoulder detail and textured fabric set this dress apart from just any other gown. Similar to the other list toppers, she kept it clean cut and classy.
These fits were the best of the 2019 Emmys, but with winners there will inevitably be losers. The following are the most tragic fashion moments of this years Emmys. From just all-round disasters to incomplete looks, the following five ladies top this Worst Dressed list.
Gwendoline Christie in Gucci was awful. The colours were drab, the draping fabric drowned out her figure and the earrings looked like they belonged to someone else’s look as they didn’t match any other part of her outfit. This look reminded me of curtains with gold hardware haphazardly thrown onto Christie. Her outfit was an injustice to fashion and would’ve fit in better in her claim to fame, Game of Thrones.
Speaking of curtains, Lena Headey comes close to the top spot on the Worst Dressed. Black ribbons from her bust and waist were too stark against the light floral pattern that made up the rest of the dress. This dress had too many layers, giving off the same curtain-like look as Christie. This look was more suited for a lamp shade than an awards show.
Jenny McCarthy missed the mark (by a substantial amount) with her look. A frayed blue dress paired with chunky boots, black nails, leather belts and a chain necklace looked like two different looks that got in a bad accident with each other. This look was very early 2000s in the worst way possible. The mismatched, poorly done rocker vibe earns McCarthy a spot on the Worst Dressed list.
Amy Adams also gets a well-deserved spot on this list. Wearing a dark, puffy sleeved, full length … nightie? This dress looked awful on Adams, the print was strange and the sheerness of the black gown over a tan underdress completely washed out her light complexion. The slicked back fishtailed ponytail with big hoops confused me and the dress looked very 1800s but the hair looked like it belonged in the 90s. As much as I love Adams, there was no way this look is avoiding any Worst Dressed list.
Despite my appreciation for Dascha Polanco’s acting, this look could not escape my Worst Dressed. Polanco could’ve possibly gotten by with the big sleeves, yes they were too big but at least they were something different. However, the piece of tulle tied around her waist was an absolute fashion travesty. It looked completely undone and poorly thought out. Although her makeup and hair was stunning, the entire look was ruined by this dress. The real culprit that led to Polanco’s spot on the Worst Dressed list: the belt of tulle.
