Alphie’s revival: the new Faith and Life Centre

There are changes in store for The Faith and Life Centre this year. It has a new home in Alphie’s Trough and a new Christian Reformed chaplain to close out 2019.

According to Shannon Wilson, project manager for the renovations to Alphie’s Trough, the once on-campus restaurant for faculty and graduate students did not work out and the building has been vacant for some time. The Faith and Life Centre needed a new home due to the renovations in DeCew residence, its former home, so this became an ideal space for them.

“This is a space The Faith and Life Centre wanted for a long time, not specifically Alphie’s, but having a space where all the different faith and life community could meet together. This was a good opportunity to turn Alphie’s Trough into an event and community gathering space,” said Wilson.

Alphie’s Trough is the ski chalet style building at the north side of Thistle corridor. Use Thistle corridor and the exit doors to the left to locate the new Faith and Life Centre sign already in place. This upper entrance can be used by students but ensuring the building is accessible in an ongoing process.

Important changes need to be made for The Faith and Life Centre to be accessible. According to Wilson, renovations are expected to begin this month, following unforeseen delays over the summer.

The project will make The Faith and Life Centre completely accessible by adding an accessible door and making a path from Schmon Tower down to the lower entrance of Alphie’s Trough. By redoing the path, The Faith and Life Centre will not only be accessible, but will be safer for all users. Other interior renovations include new carpet and paint, along with the removal of the bar area and the addition of storage for Faith and Life to use.

According to the new chaplain, Zack DeBruyne, the new Faith and Life Centre, “will be a beautiful space for students to practice their faith, to study and even to enjoy free coffee.”

The Faith and Life Centre will have an open house on Wednesday September 4, 2019 from 5:30 p.m.–7:30 p.m. at which the community can gather and meet the new chaplain.

Other events scheduled for The Faith and Life Centre include The Ministry Kick-Off Fire on Tuesday, Sep. 3, 2019 from 7:30–10:00 p.m. at Alphie’s Fire Pit and The Community Meal: Toonie Supper held on Thursday, Sept. 12,  2019 from 5:30–7:15 p.m at The Faith and Life Centre.
