RUNNING FOR VPSS
To the best of your understanding, what is the role and responsibilities of the VPSS?
The VPSS position acts as the conduit for the students. I both represent and serve Brock badgers to the best of my ability by fighting and advocating for student interests and acting as a liaison between all different and unique departments of the university. The roles of the VPSS are to more knowingly work with BUSU to execute large scale events such as O-Week, Homecoming, Frost Week and Wellness week/Success week initiatives, but to also work with clubs and students to help and act as a resource to whatever justifiable cause they are trying to complete. Now with formalities aside, the way I truly look at the VPSS position being is that they are the student life coach of the university. An individual that actively looks at ways to improve student life even in areas that extend outside of their specific platform.
Why have you decided to run for the position of VPSS?
I’ve wanted to always run for VPSS ever since I was in my first year at Brock. Not president, Not External Affairs, or Financial Affairs given all the time I’ve been able to consider it at Brock. I believe with my past involvement and skill set my personality and experiences match the roles and requirements of the VPSS position. I’ve been volunteering ever since I was in my first year at Brock by becoming a Building Advocate of DeCew and strategies member of the Brock Marketing Association (Previously known as BUMA). I’ve also not only assisted in getting Antonio Sergi elected into VPFA but I also got elected as a Goodman school representative onto BUSAC all within my first year! After helping clubs through my involvement and helping start one of my own clubs GoLive in my second year as well as being tied for the elections for at-large on BUSAC, I’ve always had a drive to pursue more ambitious involvement within the BUSU community.
Why do you believe you should be elected VPSS?
I believe I should be elected because I am the most energetic candidate in terms of consistent drive of involvement. I later on joined the Sigma Chi colony at Brock University while later last year have become a founding father of a Sigma Chi fraternity chapter at Brock University. Some of our own alumni being Bradd Pitt, David Letterman, and Luke Bryan of our fraternity as a whole I can confidently say I share similar values when looking at high ambition and fidelity. I’ve also worked for Spotify music as a Brock Brand manager and assisted clubs and students in throwing events around campus via the Spotify brand. Badgers, I live and breathe Brock! With experiences coming from huge world wide brands in music and having consistent involvement with clubs and volunteer work and now as a Marketing and Web Coordinator for BUSU, I do not need to hit the ground running as VPSS as I’m already halfway through the sprint!
If you needed to summarize your platform into three main issues at Brock that you believe need to be addressed, what would they be? How do you plan to address these issues?
I’ve noticed with less support coming in from the government on different and uncertain aspects, I believe we as a collective need to come together to strengthen multiple aspects of our student experience that matters. Was it not Brock that promoted the motto of Both sides of the brain? Where our achievements and successes must be complemented with our extra curricular involvements in a two way manner. For example I’d like to promote more athletic support by working with the athletics department in trying to kick start our badger spirit! I’d love to worth with athletics in getting half-time live music game shows with the mass list of student artists that I’ve accumulated throughout my time at Brock. I’d also want to improve our success week initiative by collaborating with Brock Makerspace and BioLinc who both of which I’ve already communicated with and have agreed upon the discussion to get Success & Innovation week up and running! And lastly, DOGS! Mental health is a huge aspect at Brock which needs to be consistently addressed, I’d like to increase the frequency of the puppy room on campus from once a semester to once a month! If you’re a cat lover then fear not we will work to getting a kitten room on campus too! And if you’re allergic or just not a fan of animals just know these rooms will be separated from the main campus building while other wellness initiatives will be taken place given more live music on campus and alternative stress relief workshops!
If elected what would you do differently from past VPSS?
As a club member throughout my undergraduate degree at Brock, I’d like to consistently engage clubs with a stronger consistency and also engaging more innovation leaning clubs with the right resources and utilities that we can work to find on campus. I want to promote a more open and transparent discussion by always asking the students on what they’d like to see at Brock via surveys and feedback that would be launched throughout the year. I’d also like to engage student life and the Marilyn I school downtown by organizing open-ended discussions as to what our mission statements are and how we can find similarities with goals and responsibilities. I’d like to see more of the departments being open to working together not just initially but throughout and after my time here at Brock University. Lastly, while we have had some great past executives that have held this position, I’d like to strive further in being a down-to-earth individual that’s easy to approach and communicate.
