RUNNING FOR VPSS
To the best of your understanding, what is the role and responsibilities of the VPSS?
The Vice President of Student Services is responsible for making sure that Brock students have a memorable and enjoyable experience through events and programming that is offered. They collaborate with various departments such as Athletics, Student Life, International Student Services and Residence to strengthen engagement. They are the main voice for students in regard to services and events that are desired. They act as a Brand Ambassador for BUSU and play a big part in bringing students together thus making Brock feel like a second home. The VPSS oversees the club portfolio and sits on the Clubs Policy Committee (CPC) as Chair. As CPC Chair, they recommend the funding that a club needs with the committee and suggest ways to possibly cut down the club’s expenses. The VPSS administers and supervises O-week, Frost Week, Wellness Initiatives and Homecoming. Finally, the VPSS presents a biweekly report at BUSAC meetings about their progress within BUSU and supports the Partnership Manager to bring in sponsors.
Why have you decided to run for the position of VPSS?
The VPSS plays a big role in bringing students together and making Brock feel like a second home. As students it’s difficult moving to a new place, being far from your family, and only knowing a few people. I would like to bring a different perspective and approach to the role of VPSS. Every year the candidates seem to have very similar platforms mostly focusing on bettering current events. I will improve our current events and I will be introducing new events and activities to get our students excited again. I want to cater to all types of Brock students by planning new and engaging events. I have a plethora of experiences that will help me to fulfill my platform. I want to serve the students, increase school spirit, student involvement, student satisfaction, and be a voice for the students. Overall, I want the best for my fellow Badgers and I want them have a better Brock experience. I’m confident that I can advocate and bring events that students would like to see at Brock University.
Why do you believe you should be elected VPSS?
I have students’ interests at heart and I have the knowledge to fulfill my platform. I have been actively involved in different clubs and volunteering activities every year that I’ve been at Brock. I’m a well-rounded person with interests such as dance, working out, student government, hair styling, barbering, broadcasting, and school spirit. Some experiences include Residence Action Council as a Building Advocate, Roots Treasurer, BUSAC Student at Large, BUSAC Goodman School of Business Representative, Appeals Committee, Live4Dance, Pep Rally performer, O-week volunteer, and Homecoming volunteer. These experiences helped me to gain extensive knowledge about BUSU operations and be integrated into the community. I will always put Brock students first. My office would be open for many hours each day to hear new ideas, feedback or answer questions from the students. Also, my platform points are unique. My platform has creative ideas that will enhance the Brock experience at a low cost to Brock and its students. It’s a win for everyone!
If you needed to summarize your platform into three main issues at Brock that you believe need to be addressed, what would they be? How do you plan to address these issues?
The 3 main issues that need to be addressed are academics, revamping Frost week and revamping Wellness Week.
- Academics: In terms of academics, we need more electrical outlets in our older classrooms. This is especially important if you’re a student that takes notes on their laptop.
- Frost Week: I’m going to add more events to our Frost Week including a “Brock’s Got Talent” show and “The Brock Ball.” The talent show will be very entertaining and there will be prizes for the top 3 performers. “The Brock Ball” will be a formal dinner and dance that any student and their guest can attend.
- Wellness Week: Brock currently ranks #1 in mental health and it’s important to maintain that ranking. I will be adding Free Lunches in addition to our free breakfast that we currently provide. I will also add “Free Manicures and Pedicures.” I will achieve this by partnering up with Niagara College students in the Esthetician program. Thirdly, I will add a Carnival that will take place during the last Wellness week of the school year. This will include rides, games and food. This will be a great way to release some stress and bond with friends.
If elected what would you do differently from past VPSS?
The past VPSS’s have done a great job. I think that more events need to be created in order to cater to more students. There has been too much focus on simply improving our current events. As a 4th year student, the same events each year can become boring and I want to bring some fresh events to our campus for the students. I think that when you have something outside of classes to look forward to that you stay motivated as a student and it helps with your mental wellbeing. If a student has a great programming idea and the funds are available then I will host that event. I want the students to know that I will be there for them in any way that I can. I hope to not only be an employee but a mentor, friend and a source of support. I will be the same friendly, approachable, and proactive Christina that I am today if elected as your next VPSS.
