RUNNING FOR President
To the best of your understanding, what is the role and responsibilities of the President?
The primary responsibility of the president is to provide executive leadership and strategic direction for the advancement of our student union (BUSU). The president is also responsible for representing undergraduate students to university’s senior administration, Board of Trustees and the faculty association. The role is also responsible for reporting all of the union’s activities to Brock University Students’ Administrative Council (BUSAC) and BUSU Board of Directors. The enforcement of constitution, bylaws, policies and procedures is ultimately the president’s responsibility as well. The president is BUSU’s representative at Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance (OUSA), and Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA) in addition the president is also responsible for maintaining good relationships with all other relevant stakeholders in the post-secondary education sector.
Why have you decided to run for the position of President?
I have decided to run for the position of president for two reasons, my passion for enhancing the student life on campus and my ability to do so. I have been involved with BUSU for the past two years, first serving an at-large student councillor on BUSAC, and then being elected to multiple committees by the council. This past year I also served on BUSU Board of Directors, and am currently the Vice-President, Finance and Administration. I’m also an undergraduate student senator at Brock University Senate. After serving our students in various roles over the last couple of years, the next opportunity that presented itself was the position of President.
Why do you believe you should be elected President?
I believe I should be elected President because of my experience and my proven track record as a student leader. In addition to my experience as previously highlighted, I have developed strong relationships with crucial stakeholders in the community which I’ll leverage over my term as president to find solutions for our students.
After extensive research and consultation with students, administrators and service providers I have been able to draft a platform which is realistic, relevant and centred around key issues faced by students every day, a platform that makes our university more accessible, affordable and inclusive.
If you needed to summarize your platform into three main issues at Brock that you believe need to be addressed, what would they be? How do you plan to address these issues?
I’m running on an eight point platform, and the following is the summary of three of my main platform points. If you wish to learn about my other platform points, you can connect with me on social media @yeaswekhan2019

Having been the VPFA for a year, what advantages do you believe you have from your experience?
Serving as the VPFA and being a member of the Board last year has helped me learn so much about BUSU, Brock University, the Regional and Municipal governments, and other relevant stakeholders in the post-secondary education. The experience has also provided me with a great deal of understanding of BUSU’s bylaws, policies and procedures, practices and its culture.
I also have a considerable amount of knowledge about BUSU’s policies and procedures around fiscal management. Having a good understanding of our financial position is very important for all executives, and it’s essential to making fiscally responsible decisions on behalf of the students.
As the VPFA, in addition to a multi-million dollar operating budget, I was also directly responsible for our U-Pass Program and our Health and Dental Plan, two of our biggest services that make up for more than half of our annual collection in fees.
These challenges, opportunities and experiences have prepared me well to serve as your next president.
