Last week I wrote about how we are nearing the end of the semester and that we students just need to power through the final weeks. Then I got thinking: the final weeks of the fall semester is usually the perfect time to think about goals you want to achieve in the winter semester. That could be getting more involved or something along those lines.
I have a lot of people approach me and say that they’ve had an interest in writing for The Brock Press, but either don’t know how or just never get around to it.
The winter semester is a perfect time to get involved because it bridges your way to next year if you’re returning to Brock University. Becoming part of a club or organization now will help you have a leg up starting in September 2019. That’s why I say if you’re interested in getting involved with The Brock Press, do so early in the new semester.
Quick side note: we begin hiring our new staff for the 2019/2020 year in March/April, so if you’re thinking about it, that time is fast approaching.
Also, getting involved as a contributor gives you a leg up in potentially becoming a paid writer with us next year. You can experience, you learn our writing style and you become a better journalist.
Personally, I began my time with The Brock Press as a contributor in my first year. My commitment and motivation as a writer led to a paid job in my second-year, and now I’ve been the Editor-in-Chief for three years — giving me the chance to meet many people around the Brock community and build new connections.
My days are numbered at The Brock Press with this being my last year at Brock (hopefully), but either way, it will be my last with the Press. All I can say is, I don’t regret taking on the contribution role in first-year. Sure it wasn’t a paid gig and sure it led to a paid gig, but I became a better writer and grew in a lot of areas.
If you are interested in writing, journalism or just seeing how The Brock Press works, reach out to me at email@example.com. Next semester is a time of branching out. The Brock Press is always welcoming volunteers and we welcome everyone with open arms.
If you’re unsure of getting involved, send me an email and we can talk about your concerns.
The Brock Press is an independent student-run newspaper, and it allows for you to have a voice on campus. So if this is something you are interested in, reach out and we can get you started. And who knows, maybe you’ll be a part of the staff next year!
