Happy Valentine’s Day to Me, from Me: Nine tips for being your own Valentine

All my single ladies, all my single ladies. This seems to be my anthem these days, especially now that the highly commercialized holiday that is so heavily focused on couples is finally here. Haven’t found a special someone to be your Valentine? Well, have no fear. Valentine’s Day can be celebrated in so many different ways and it isn’t exclusive to couples. Some enjoy spending this holiday with their friends, family members or even their pets. But what is often overlooked is the fact that this can also be just another excuse to spoil yourself. If you’re like me and are dating yourself, then here are nine things you can do to make your Valentine’s Day special.

Dinner and a show anyone?

This is one of the most classic date ideas, but most people don’t know that there is something special about doing it alone. Going alone means that there’s no one else to pay for, no one talking during the show and no awkwardness and unnecessary small talk. If spending money to go to the movies isn’t something you’re interested in, go to a play or see some live music! Brock’s Dramatic Arts students put on many shows throughout the year at the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts.

Book a solo trip

I recently booked a weekend getaway for the end of the month as a special gift to myself. This is a great option seeing as Valentine’s Day is so close to reading week this year!

Have a self-care evening

Sometimes it’s nice to just practice mindfulness by taking a hot bath, pouring yourself a drink and enjoying a night of sweet solitude. Take care of yourself in whatever way works for you. You deserve it.

Indulge in heart shaped food

If you love food and want to engage in the Valentine’s Day madness, then treat yourself to heart shaped food! Some pizza companies deliver heart shaped pizzas for the day, and Tim Hortons has already started with their heart shaped donuts. Food and love go together well so what better way to show yourself how much you love yourself than heart-shaped goodies?

Go shopping

I understand we’re students and “extra” money isn’t something most of us are familiar with. But a little retail therapy can be just what you need this Valentine’s Day. Make a budget that works for you and buy yourself something that makes you happy. Whether it’s clothing, a book or a painting.

Make yourself a care package

Grab some candy, baked goods, gift cards and any other treats you want to make yourself a personalized care package. If you want to really go the extra mile, get it sent to yourself.

Take a class

Many single people that I know — myself included — often talk about the things they felt weren’t feasible when they were in a relationship. For whatever reason, sometimes it feels like other people hold you back from trying new things. Best part about dating yourself? You have nothing to lose and no other opinions to consider besides your own. Try a class that you’ve always been interested in. There’s anything from pottery to dancing. Do some research into different places in the region that offer classes that you’re looking for!

Go ice skating

A popular date idea I’ve seen for couples is going ice skating for Valentine’s Day. Why not go alone? There are quite a few arenas in the Niagara Region that you can take advantage of!

Take a trip to an art gallery

Art galleries are one of my favourite places to go alone. To be alone in such a creative space is incredibly relaxing. You don’t have to be disturbed by anyone else or explain the art to other people. It’s just you and the works of incredibly talented artists. But what’s nice about this is that you’re not completely alone, you’re surrounded by strangers. This makes it a great way to meet new people. I always find myself making friends when I’m in artsy places.

So there it is, nine ways to get the best out of your Valentine’s Day with yourself. Sometimes you are your own best company and there is nothing wrong with putting yourself first. Remember that learning to make yourself happy is a success that no one else can take from you.
