The netflix series Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is off to an unbelievable start with the new release becoming a stand-out among Netflix productions. The series, based on Douglas Adams’ novel series of the same name, follows a myriad of fun, lovable, and arguably insane characters through their adventures getting into shocking, and often comedically violent, situations.
The hysterical, mind-bending, science-fiction roller coaster is a BBC America production and filmed primarily in British Columbia, starring Samuel Barnett as Dirk Gently, the Holistic Detective himself, and his assistant, Todd Brotzman, played by Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood. These characters stand out fabulously due to being well written, constructed and acted, as does every character in the show.
To rattle off some highlights, Hannah Marks as Todd’s sister Amanda, is amazing; as is Fiona Dourif, playing Bart Churlish, a “Holistic Assassin”; Jade Eshete, as the badass Farah Black; Mpho Koaho, as Ken, and the rest of the cast and crew too. The episodes are beautifully constructed, with spectacular, yet not too flashy, special effects and a score that ties everything together with a bow.
Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is currently available on Netflix and it is the first thing you should watch in 2017 if you haven’t already done so. It is an outstanding show with masterful production being a true one-of-a-kind story that will have you laughing, crying, screaming, punching and kicking like only a story written by Douglas Adams can.
“What is my place in the Universe?” one might ask. “How do I fit into all of this?” “Is there meaning in the madness?” those are questions that can’t be answered by the simple words of an arts and culture editor, but maybe, just maybe, you can find some of the answers — or at the very least some friendly faces with similar queries — in Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency.
Sherlock seems to have a lot to live up to now that he is no longer the only detective in town and Watson never played in a punk band (though was too, a Hobbit).
