Brock Men’s Soccer collects first win against Algoma

Coming into their sixth and seventh games of the season this weekend the Men’s Soccer team was looking for their first win against Algoma University. They did just that as they took the first matchup 3-0 before playing to a 3-3 draw in game two on Sunday.

Starting on Saturday, Defender Eric Bradey was shown a yellow card for a hard slide tackle early in the game. Bradey would make up for it in the 35th minute however by heading in a corner kick from teammate Liam Wilson.

In the 67th minute Wilson set up another goal by feeding Nathan Briglio a nice pass who buried it to put the Badgers up by two. The goal was Briglio’s second of the year.

In the 73rd minute, Eric Serafino would solidify the victory by volleying in a shot from the edge of the 18-yard box. His first goal of the season made it 3-0 where the game would finish.

Goalkeeper Matt Zaikos put aside all three shot attempts he faced.

Coming off their first win of the season, the men’s team bounced back on Sunday and played Algoma for the second time. This time however the Thunderbirds were able to get on the score sheet.

Starting off in the 21st minute, Nathan Briglio netted his third of the season. Marco Paoletti set up the goal with a cross. In the 28th minute, Paoletti added onto the lead by burying one past Algoma goalkeeper Nicholas Palazzi. Just moments later however in the 34th minute, Algoma would get on the score sheet for the first time all weekend when Williams Amoaka beat goalkeeper Matt Zaikos.

The first half would end with the Badgers up 2-1. Mohammed Agarni tied the game up for the Thunderbirds in the 48th minute. Not long after, freshman Liam Wilson scored on a brilliant free kick from about 20 yards out.

The Badgers couldn’t hold onto their lead. After conceding a penalty kick in the 81st minute, Algoma’s freshman forward Ryan Marchan would make no mistake and bury the game-tying goal.

Zaikos stopped two shots for the Badgers, while Palazzi made six saves for the Thunderbirds.

Despite dominating most of the game Saturday, Brock was unable to secure a win against Algoma the second time around on Sunday. Brock collected four points over the weekend which brings their total to five for the season. They are just below Waterloo (eight points) and above Algoma (one point) in the OUA West Division.

The next game for the Badgers is against the McMaster Marauders on September 21 at Alumni Field. The match is set to begin at 7:15 p.m., while the Women will begin their match at 5:00 p.m.
