The First Ontario Performing Arts Centre (PAC) has brought a handful of new and exciting entertainment opportunities to the downtown core of St. Catharines. In addition to the wide array of performing and musical arts the centre has housed, PAC also opened its very own Film House, Niagara’s newest cinema.
Opened in February, PAC’s Film House runs eight to ten screenings a week, featuring themed or genre-specific nights. Wednesdays at the Film House are dedicated to documentaries, and Saturdays are dedicated to fun, family features. Titles range from first-run features — meaning new, popular films that were previously unfeatured (like February’s screening of Brooklyn) — to documentaries, science fiction, classics, family favourites and more. And of course, the Film House includes refreshments and alcoholic beverages of your choosing, the perfect way to encapsulate the movie theatre feel.
The Film House features a state-of-the-art digital projector, stereo-surround speakers, a stage for post-film events, and even question and answer periods after select screenings.
The purpose of this brand new cinema is to provide the Niagara region’s film-going population with the opportunity to experience films in their intended setting and format: on the big screen, in a comfy seat, and with the company of fellow film-lovers.
The film-lover experience comes at an affordable cost too. General admission to a Film House screening is only $9, but like all other aspects of their centre, PAC also offers a VIP membership for the dedicated moviegoer. To become a Film House Member, you must pay a $25 fee, which lasts until the end of the year. The membership grants you $7 admission to each screening, as well as VIP access to meet and greets, artist chats and receptions.
This week’s screenings include Irrational Man, Heart of a Dog, Son of Saul, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and Poltergeist.
With the addition of a new theatre that features world-class films, PAC is committed to building a vibrant and fluent film culture in downtown St. Catharines, and encourages all members of the community to come out and enjoy a show.
