Ronda Rousey, someone who in the recent months has been called the most dominant athlete in sports, quickly saw that title no longer stand after her fight at UFC 193 on Nov. 14. Rousey stepped into the ring defending her bantamweight title and her 12-0 record against Holly Holm, who was defending a 9-0 mixed martial arts record.
Prior to the match, many expected this to be Rousey’s toughest match yet. It was not going to be a fight that lasted under a minute, like many of Rousey’s fights have before.
Earlier in October, Rousey appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and said, “I feel like [Holm is] going to try and keep distance and keep far away from me and get me frustrated into a point I’ll make a mistake and she can try and kick me in the head.”
Now, looking back on those words, Rousey predicted the fight even though it was not how she expected it to go. In the second round of the fight at 59-seconds, Rousey grew frustrated and did make a mistake, after which Holm’s roundhouse kicked Rousey to knockout.
It was one of the biggest upset fights in UFC history and it left Rousey’s fans in shock as the now 12-1 fighter looked completely dazed after the fight. As a result, many of Rousey’s critics took to social media to take shots at the fighter as well.
One of Rousey’s rivals in UFC, Cris ‘Cyborg’ Justino spent the night tweeting and retweeting updates on the fight. Justino has yet to fight Rousey in the ring, but has been looking for a chance.
Pop star singer Lady Gaga took to Instagram to take a shot at Rousey saying, “That’s what you get for not touching gloves!” Also, United States Presidential candidate Donald Trump tweeted, “Glad to see that Ronda Rousey lost her championship fight last night. Was soundly beaten – not a nice person!”
Following the fight, many people brought up the idea of seeing a rematch between Rousey and new champion Holm. UFC President Dana White was all for it after the match saying, “The rematch makes a lot of sense. I think the rematch is what people want to see.”
Holm’s also agreed saying, “I think a rematch makes sense for sure. I’ve been on the losing side of a fight, and I wanted the rematch, I wanted to avenge my loss.”
For Rousey though, she took to Instagram to say that she is going to take some time off, but will be back soon. If she does get her rematch, she’ll certainly have to come much more prepared.
Other results from UFC 193 were: Joanna Jedrzejczyk defeated Valerie Letourneau in a unanimous decision, Mark Hunt knocked out Antonio Silva, Robert Whittaker defeated Uriah Hall, Jared Rosholt took down Stefan Struve, Jake Matthews beat Akbarh Arreola by doctor stoppage, Kyle Noke knocked out Peter Sobotta, Gian Villante also knocked out Anthony Perosh, Danny Martinez got the victory over Richie Vaculik, James Moontasri knocked out Anton Zafir, Richard Walsh got the better of Steve Kennedy, Daniel Kelly took down Steve Montygomery and Ben Nguyen beat Ryan Benoit through submission.
