Staying active can be one of the hardest parts of being a university student. Most people tell themselves that they will actively go to the gym throughout the year, however, there is rarely any meaningful follow through.
Brock University’s Recreation Services offers many indoor and outdoor intramurals for students to participate in throughout the year. Intramurals is for anyone and anybody. Even if sports are not your thing, intramurals welcomes those of all skill levels to participate.
Also if you are considering to get more involved with the school and looking to meet new people this is a perfect chance to do so. It does not matter if you are a freshman or a student of later years, it’s never too late to meet new people.
For Fall 2015, the University has planned some outdoor and indoor sports for both men and women, also with the choice of playing co-ed.
Outdoor fall intramurals include: slow-pitch (co-ed only), flag football (men and coed), ultimate frisbee (co-ed only), soccer (all three available) and tennis.
Indoor fall intramurals include: four on four volleyball (all three available), ball hockey (men and co-ed), basketball (men only), innertube water polo (co-ed only), badminton (men and women).
Later on in the fall semester, some indoor sports available are: men’s and women’s ice hockey, basketball (all three available), indoor soccer (co-ed only), extreme coed intramurals, more four on four volleyball (co-ed only), indoor ultimate frisbee, European handball (coed only), water volleyball (coed only) and squash singles.
There are team fees involved with every intramural sport, but, divided amongst your team it’s affordable for everyone. If you’re a first-year student and can’t find a team, you can make a team with your floormates in residence or courts in Village and Quarry View. If that is not possible, everyone has the option to sign-up individually and be added to a random team.
Registration for fall outdoor leagues open on September 11 at 8:30 a.m. and close on September 16. Fall indoor leagues registrations begin September 18th and close September 23. Fall/Winter intramural registrations don’t open till early November. However, ice hockey registration open September 28 at 8:30 a.m. and closes the following day at 6:00 p.m. Ice hockey is also played off campus so plan your transit ahead of signing up.
Each intramural is scheduled for different days of the week and generally during the evening. You can check the days of each sport online and you can also sign-up through the Brock University website or go to the front desk in Walker Complex.
