Who doesn’t like to see the product of a fellow student’s labours being appreciated? The RenderThis Film Festival gives students an opportunity to do just that while allowing students interested in movie-making and the film industry to show off their skills through short film.
This is the fifth year that Brock TV has put on the RenderThis film festival. In the 2014 RenderThis film festival, six film entries were shown to the audience and judges. The audience choice winner was Shot in the Dark by Chris Knapp. This awarded him the RenderThis 2014 Jury Award. The judges in 2014 selected a different film to receive the Judge’s Award, Blind Crimes by Adam Marshall. Both these winners were Brock University students, as were many other participants, despite the competition being open to Niagara College students as well . It is an inclusive event which allows for the demonstration of student talents to the larger surrounding community.
This year’s festival will be accepting film submissions until Monday Jan. 12, at which point they will be screened by a pre-selection committee to ensure that the films submitted comply with festival rules and regulations such as limited harsh language and content which could make the festival less enjoyable for some viewers. All films that pass this inspection will be entered in the festival until the total running time for the festival reaches one hour.
To enter, the film must be submitted to the BrockTV desk, located in the Student Learning and Innovation Commons. There is a $5 entry fee which is also used to reserve a seat for the filmmaker as well as a guest.
In past years, the festival has been held at the Pen Centre Cinema but this year’s festival will be held at the Sean O’Sullivan Theatre at Brock University. Despite this change it will maintain the longstanding tradition of being a red carpet event for participants and spectators alike.
All who attend have the opportunity to walk the red carpet just like the stars from the big screen. It is suggested that anyone attending the event dresses their best since there are prizes to be given to the attendees who dress to impress at the after party which will take place at Isaac’s following the film viewing.
The festival will be held on Jan. 22 at the Sean O’Sullivan Theatre. The reception starts at 6:00 p.m. and the show begins at 7:00 p.m. For additional information, see brocktv.ca/renderthis
