Vice President – STUDENT SERVICES CANDIDATES

LashkarLashkar Dehal

1. Why are you running for VPSS?

I am running for the position of Vice President of Student Services because I believe I have been at this school long enough and involved in this school long enough to understand what changes need to be made to give students what they want.  I believe that this is also the best position for myself as well because the way the position is structured is the perfect way for me to utilize all of my knowledge and experience I’ve earned at Brock. I’ve been developing ideas for this portfolio for the last few years and some of these ideas have been implemented by the previous VPSS executives, and that is just another reason why I believe I am fit for the position and why I am running for the position.

 2. What are the current major issues at Brock which will need to be addressed during your term, if elected?

I think that this question can be looked at from so many different views, that you will never be able to define all of them. Therefore I will be focusing on things that need to be addressed next year related to my platform. I believe that one of the issues that will very important to a successful term is a large emphasis on planning and consistency with regards to programming. Both of these will also depend on whether the programming levy passes this elections term. This is a very important referendum because it will put Brock on an equal playing field with many other universities and ensures that we will always be able to afford the events that students look forward to like O-week, Homecoming, and Frost Week. The other factor that will be a big influence in the themes of next year is whether or not the Turf Fields are built. If they are then that is a major space that I will be able to hold events on for students.  The second major theme of next year is collaboration with the various student groups on campus. I believe that BUSU is already doing a good job collaborating with different groups on campus however I believe that there is still room for growth and this is something that I wish to increase in order to make stronger more planned out events.

 3. What is the single most important point of your platform?

I don’t have a single most important point in my platform because they are all crucial to the portfolio. That being said the one I will talk about today is the one that is the largest in scale, one of the pillars of my platform, and will need the most planning. As I mentioned earlier, planning is a big part of the VPSS portfolio especially when related to events. Firstly I want to add three new marquee events in the form of a Fall Festival during first semester and a Winter Homecoming and Winter Carnival during second semester. These Marquee events would go alongside out other main events and would run before wellness weeks in each respective semester. Between the Marquee events, there will be more consistent programming so that students can create a proper schedule when incorporating events into their busy work and school schedules. Unfortunately I can’t explain all of these events in 250 words so please come to my table or contact me to get the full details of my ideas.

 4. Imparting words and slogans.

I encourage all Brock students to come out to the elections tables and check out every candidate’s platform and positioning in order to make an informed decision when voting starts.

1. Why are you running for VPSS?

My motive for running this year as VPSS is to work for things that are outside my personal gain. In my years, I have come to the realization that working for things greater than one’s own personal benefit, brings so much out of an individual. Although achieving personal goals is an important aspect in a person’s life, when working for others, you are capable of reaching heights never imagined. It is quite evident that all the great leaders throughout history have accomplished great resolutions and brought about change by working towards causes that benefited society, and not just themselves. It creates such dire responsibility, which motivates me enough to surpass expectations. As VPSS, I’ll be able to put so much into my position, not just simply because I love Brock, but mainly because Brock has provided me with so much, from amazing long-term friendships, to services that have aided me throughout my whole experience. It saddens me how others are not able to benefit from everything Brock has to offer and this is where my role as VPSS comes into play. I will persevere to make students realize their true potential and will use my earnest efforts to bring about positive change to Brock and improve student overall experience. I will do this by substantially raising BUSU awareness; through club involvement, volunteering, and also by addressing other problems concerning the student body.

2. What are the current major issues at Brock which will need to be addressed during your term, if elected?

An important issue that has come to my attention which I wish to address and bring reform to is student awareness.  I find that nowadays, students are not aware of things that are going on at Brock. Judging on former statistics, only about 1/3 of students voted in the previous year. This may be due to lack of interest or because students just do not realize how crucial it is to partake in school elections and voice the interests of the student body.  Another thing I find is that students are not sufficiently aware of all the services BUSU has to offer them; such as emergency student loans, foot patrol late on Thursday nights and throughout the day, personal counselling services, access to a food bank that can also come in great benefit during their typical student financial struggles, and also the variety of clubs students can involve themselves in to  help ,and form relationships with students who have similar interests. Other issues I will also give my utmost attention to are; improving club space, working to implement a 24hr lounge, instead of plaza, a bigger group study space, creating student incentives to shop more at school by adding rewards with purchases and adding more variety, and creating services or events to involve and help international students get a better feel and integration into our Brock and Canadian community. Also, I aspire to improve student social life by improving Issac’s events, and most importantly, addressing the attrition of school spirit that has long been plaguing Brock, through pep rallies, Hunger Games, BUSU Grammies, among other things.

 3. What is the single most important point of your platform?

One very important point in my platform that I cannot emphasize enough is… Involvement. I am an avid believer that once we have involvement, we can indirectly hit all the birds with one stone. Involvement would solve awareness issues, raise brock spirit, and involve as much of the student population as realistically possible. It will solve the problems that students don’t’ know about. It will in turn bring bigger voter turnouts. Involvement in itself, will raise curiosity to let students self-inform; ask questions, raise problems, and bring in solutions themselves as well. There are currently 102 clubs at Brock, in which some have 12 members, and others have 300. If the whole Brock population of 18,512 students were involved in clubs or volunteering, then undoubtedly awareness of all the services, incentives, and knowledge on current issues surrounding Brock, would be much more spread across the whole population and thus providing a larger potential for change. I am aiming for massive change in the social interaction of Brock; i want volunteering, whether it be through clubs, charities, or other initiatives, be the soul of Brock. I imagine students motivating and pushing other students to get involved in at least one extra-curricular activity, if not more.

 4. Imparting words and slogans.

We are capable of achieving greatness together, it just takes one to step up to the challenge. It all starts with one. An f1 racer relies on his team to reach the finish line. Be my team and join, and together we can win and celebrate as a school, as a union, as a TEAM.

Paul Dermody

1. Why are you running for VPSS?

I am running for the position of Vice President Student Services because I am passionate about not only our university but our student culture and our experiences that we have over the course of four or more years. The VPSS position is the one position that allows you to work the closest with the student body and to encourage our students to get further involved and that is to show no disrespect to the rest of the Executive positions we have at BUSU. I love working alongside students not just in the office but during the various events we have at BUSU and in and outside the community. Seeing students get involved and most of all enjoying themselves at Brock U is really the greatest payment we get at BUSU. Seeing others enjoy themselves really makes me happy and the VPSS plays a significant role in our students truly getting an awesome university experience.

2. What are the current major issues at Brock which will need to be addressed during your term, if elected?

Student space is still a problem. I understand with the creation of the Marilyn I. Walker School, more space will be available for student use underneath Schmon Tower. I am ready to fight to ensure that space will be available to our student body and the various clubs that need it.

Another issue is creating a more well rounded O-Week for all students. A number of students I have been able to talk to have made it clear that more programming for our 2, 3, 4 years needs to be addressed. Liv has done an amazing job with this past years’ O-Week in trying to get everyone involved. I really would love to continue the strides Liv has made and work further in creating a well rounded O-Week for all Brock Students.  Another important matter is that this upcoming school year marks Brock’s 50th Anniversary as a institution. That will be the major theme throughout the year. I would love to see Isaac’s Army take a greater role with our students and athletics. Isaac’s Army has grown significantly over the past few years and it only is going to get larger as the institution matures. That is very much the same with Homecoming. We will be in our 5th year with Homecoming and it is only going to get bigger and better. Especially with it being our 50th Anniversary. Much like we have had a problem at times involving our upperclass students with O-Week, it tends to be the opposite with our 1st year students at Homecoming. I’d really love to see all of our students #ROCKINTHERED come Homecoming. It is really important to instill our traditions at Brock into our younger students because they are the ones to carry it on after we have graduated.

3. What is the single most important point of your platform?

The most important part of my platform is to increase student involvement and engagement. Either it be through one of the 100 Clubs we have, internships offered through BUSU or even student jobs with BUSU. We have to inform our students of what is available. We truly have to make it easier for them to get involved from day one. Just recently Brock University has released their mobile application. It would be really great to work with the University to get a BUSU page on it or even our own app. Also use ExperienceBU (ExBU) further. ExBU has made it very easy for students to access events and opportunities to get involved. Work with the other departments on campus to encourage student involvement. On the other end of the spectrum. Work with Clubs, athletics and the various other departments to get the word out about their student opportunities. Especially give our Clubs the support they want and need. Have more capable promotion. Just like BUSU Executive exposer, Clubs need the same support from us. Instead of having one Clubs Fair at the beginning of each semester, hold it twice a semester. Once at the beginning and one after each reading week. This is so student can be constantly reminded of the opportunities to get involved.

4. Imparting words and slogans.

I want to wish all the candidates and their teams good luck during the campaign period and most importantly to our students, get out and vote. Get your roommates to vote, get your classmates and your neighbour to vote. Heck sign Grandma up for some classes and get her to vote.

Remember, Be the BEST Badger YOU can be. Vote Paul Dermody VPSS

Cheers Badgers!
