As the new year of 2014 begins movie fans eagerly await the biggest upcoming releases of the year. One such title is Edge of Tomorrow starring Tom Cruise opposite Emily Blunt. The film follows the story of a soldier named Bill Cage during a war between the human race and the invading aliens called Mimics. In the movie, Bill gets caught in a time loop that causes him to constantly re-live the events of a deadly battle in the war and the events that precede it. This gives him the opportunity to change the events that he has witnessed and save the day.
Edge of Tomorrow was directed by Doug Liman who also directed The Bourne Identity (2002), Mr. and Mrs. Smith (2005) and Jumper (2008). This Sci-fi must see is set to launch in 3D and IMAX 3D on June 6 of 2014 and is sure to thrill audiences.
Also headed our way this year is the anticipated film The Monuments Men. This film is set during the tail end of World War II and follows a platoon of Allied forces made up of museum directors, curators and art historians. They are tasked with the rescue of various works of art of cultural significance that have been stolen by the Nazi’s.
The Monuments Men features an all-star cast of elite actors like John Goodman, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray and of course, George Clooney himself. The film is scheduled to release Feb. 7.
In the New Year there will also be a rebirthing of a cinema legend of sorts. The cult classic Godzilla is being recreated this year and looks to be an extravagent modernization. This rendition of the famous series will be making changes to the story that makes it more relevant to modern human culture. The film features an emphasis on humanity and the return of Godzilla as force of nature rather than the product of nuclear testing. This opens up new oppurtunities to focus on a range of relevant world issues. It is said that in the film Godzilla will be going head to head with another group of monsters called Mutos.
Large portions of the film were shot in Vancouver, British Columbia. The rest of the film was largely shot in Hawaii. Godzilla isn’t scheduled to release until May 16 and is sure to be ground shaking.
Who can forget about everybody’s favourite wall crawler, Spider-Man? The web-slinging sensation is back again in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. In the sequel, Peter Parker is still struggling with the problems of leading two lives. Threats appear as Parker begins to reinvestigate his father’s death. In this case these threats take the form of Electro and Rhino who are some of Spider-Man’s prime villains in the comics.
The film will be including the same cast as the original with the addition of a few new characters such as Jamie Foxx as Electro and Paul Giamatti as Rhino. Of course Stan “The Man” Lee will be making his usual cameo appearance in the film as well. The movie was filmed in New York just this past year and is scheduled to swing its way to the big screen on May. 2.
