Dan Tanel (Brampton, Ont.) of Brock (8-8-3 OUA) scored with a wicked snap-shot from the high-slot in overtime to finish off the OUA West leading Lakehead Thunderwolves (13-3-1 OUA.) 4-3 on January 10, at the Seymour Hannah Center.
Adrian Volpe (Burlington, Ont.) played an impressive game, winning his second in a row, as the Badgers had beaten York (9-8-1 OUA) on Jan 8.
The game against Lakehead was fast and free-flowing, with little stoppages in play and plenty of opportunities for both teams.
Brock’s penalty kill spoiled a very sharp power play by Lakehead about halfway through the first period. The Badgers’ special teams units proved to be the difference makers in this game, killing both penalties they faced, and scoring two power play goals themselves.
It took until 12:31 of the second period for the game’s first goal, scored by Andrew Radjenovic (Hamilton, Ont.) of Brock on a power play. Radjenovic unleashed a shot from the point immediately after a faceoff win, and the puck blistered through a packed crease and into the net, making the score 1-0 for the home team. C.J. Dickson (Thorold, Ont.) and Daniel Zweep (Richmond Hill, Ont.) were credited with assists.
Clearly anxious to answer the goal, Lakehead took to firing a plethora of outside shots at Volpe, who kept the visitors off the score sheet for the entirety of the first two frames.
Shortly after the third period began, Lakehead tied the game when Cody Alcock (Oshawa, Ont.) received a stretch pass from Mitch Fillman (Oakville, Ont.) between two Brock defenders. Alcock warped into the Brock zone by himself, and rocketed a shot straight over Volpe and under the crossbar to even the score.
Goals were added by Carson Dubchak (Kenora, Ont.) and Andrew Wilkins (Pickering, Ont.) of Lakehead, as well as Jordan Gignac (Hamilton, Ont.) and Kaine Geldart (Kingston, Ont.) for Brock before overtime. Geldart’s score was especially impressive, scoring it on the power play for his seventh goal of the season. In the left corner, Geldart faked a pass to shake his defender and glided in front of the net, deking Thunderwolves goaltender Justin McDonald (Turtleford, Sask.) to give the Badgers a 3-2 lead. This moment of brilliance looked to be the game-winner until Wilkins tied the game less than one minute later.
Johnson Andrews (NOTL, Ont.) assisted two of Brock’s third period goals, his 13th and 14th assists in 19 games this season.
However, it was the ever-steady defenseman Tanel who wrapped up the fine Brock performance when he brought the house down in overtime. A sprawling save by Volpe caused for action up the ice where after a series of McDonald saves, Tanel ended up with an errant puck at the point with no one around him. Tanel walked into the high slot and popped a dart grazing the bottom of the crossbar to hand Lakehead just their third loss of the season.
Brock’s next home game is scheduled for Jan. 17 against the Western Mustangs (12-6-0 OUA) Puck drop is set for 7:15 p.m. at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
