Halloween 5K Fun Run, Walk and Zumba for United Way

This year, for the third time ever, Brock University will be holding their very own Halloween 5K Fun Run, Walk and Zumba for all of Brock’s faculty, staff and students to participate in. On October 31 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., participants of the event will help contribute to Brock’s Annual United Way fundraiser while dressing up in their Halloween costumes. This event is a great time for staff and students to support a fantastic cause and to have fun while doing it.

The event is hosted through Brock’s United Way and anyone interested can participate to run five kilometres on Halloween to help raise pledges for the United Way of St. Catharines and District. The course that is run/walked takes place right around campus. This year, Brock is aiming high. The goal for this year’s Fun Run is $120,000. Brock’s United Way campaign helps fund 65 different services and helps approximately 100,000 people in the Niagara region. The progress so far can be seen by the main entrance to the school, right by the elevators – make sure to take a look.

Sandy Howe, who is in charge of the Fun Run this year, has mentioned a few other goals for this year’s event as well. “We are aiming to have 50% of the faculty and staff on campus participate in the United Way Campaign in some way, and this is a great event to get involved with if you’ve never been involved before! We hope to see participation and awareness continue to grow this year, and of course fun to be had by all,” she said.

Before the event starts, anyone who is interested in participating for the event is required to print off a registration form and donation sheet which can be found online on the Event page on the Brock web-site. Anyone interested in participating can also sign up on the Facebook page online or can just show up on Halloween at the registration desk. Participants are encouraged to collect as many pledges as they can; a minimum pledge of $10 is required to take part in the event. Registration takes place the day of the event outside the costume store, where the pledges will be collected. All the participants have to do is show up in their costumes and be prepared to help those in need!

Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m., and is followed by a Zumba warm-up at noon which will continue until 1:00 p.m., and the run itself will start at 12:15 p.m. This year for the first time, participants have the option to either complete the run or continue to do Zumba until it is finished.
United Way is also providing incentive for people to dress up in costumes; there will be prizes available for the participant who raised the most pledges, who wore the best costume and had the best overall run time. The five kilometre route map and following information can also be found on the event page online.

There will also be a “Mystery Boomer”(badger) at the event that will be selling ballot tickets for anyone who wishes to guess who is inside the boomer costume to be eligible to win a prize. This is also a new addition to the event this year, and something that they hope will continue to be used as an event and get people to participate in more than one way.
