NHLPA Movember Battle

With November upon us, the NHLPA is continuing its Movember tradition.
Two members of the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) – that are usually known for their fists – are the headliners in a Movember battle. George Parros of the Florida Panthers and Mike Brown of the Toronto Maple Leafs will be squaring off for the first ever World Moustache Championship.
For those uninitiated in the ways of Movember, throughout the month of November men grow out their moustaches to raise funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and male mental health initiatives.
On Nov. 1, both Parros and Brown shaved off all their facial hair and will now compete to see who can grow the best moustache over the course of the month. Team Brown and Team Parros will be recruiting fellow players to their teams throughout the month and whoever raises the most money will be crowned the champion.
By this time of the year the NHL is usually in full tilt, but with the season immersed in a lockout there has been little encouraging news in the world of hockey. So, not only is this an important event for men’s health awareness, but hopefully this will bring about some positivity for the NHL, something they have been sorely lacking over the past few months.
Parros is arguably the biggest reason the NHLPA has been so focused on Movember, and he is the reason Brown wanted to get involved. Last year Parros was able to recruit 180 other NHL players to join the cause.
At the end of the month, the team that has raised the most money will be crowned the 2012 World Moustache Champion. For winning the Movember Battle, the losing player has to wear a tie chosen by the winner, to be worn for the first game of the year.
It does not look like players will be able to showcase their moustaches on the ice this year, but they will use Twitter as a way to show fans their moustache progress.
