I have decided to take a break from “me” lists to focus on Canadian artists. Seeing as the Canadian Music Awards are airing this Tuesday, and this week is Canadian Music Week, I decided to find out which Canadian artists have sold the most records.
We Canadians are a proud country and have many musicians to boast about.
Here is a list of Canadian artists, with the respective records they have sold worldwide.
This list does have a certain bias. Many of the musicians are older and as a result have had more time to sell albums. Additionally, many newer artists have not been able to capitalize off album sales due to the trend of music piracy. As Canadians, we are among the world leaders of downloading illegal music. Without further adieu, the list . eh? 5.) Alanis Morissette – 1987 – Present – Albums sold: 60 Million
Alanis started her career at the age of 13 and was considered a protégé. Her album Jagged Little Pill is the number-one selling debut album of all time by any artist. She was originally a “dance-pop” artist and the 1992 Juno for “Most Promising Female Vocalist of the Year”. Isn’t that ironic (I couldn’t help it).
4.) Shania Twain – 1993 – Present – Albums sold: 65 Million
The Queen of Canadian Country has racked up a number of awards and accolades. Her third album, Come on Over, is the best-selling album of all time by a female musician and the best selling album in the history of country music.
3.) Bryan Adams – 1977 – Present – Albums sold: 65 Million
Awarded the Order of Canada and British Columbia, Bryan has been producing radio-friendly tunes for over three decades. He was inducted into Canada’s Music Hall of Fame at the 2006 Juno Awards. Hits include: “Cuts like a Knife”, “(Everything I Do) I Do It for You” and “Please Forgive Me”. Oh, and some little ditty about the “Summer of ’69”.
2.) Neil Young – 1960 – Present – Albums sold: between 40-70 million
The Godfather of Grunge, The Sultan of Songwriters, The Colossus of Country Rock, etc. There are far too many good things to say about one of the most influential musicians of all-time. His worldwide sales vary, due to his work with Buffalo Springfield, CSNY and his solo career.
1.) Celine Dion – 1981 – Present – Albums sold: 200+ Million
Love her or hate her, Celine is the number one selling Canadian artist of all time. She has produced 13 French-language studio albums and 10 English-language studio albums. As of 2007, she was the fifth richest women in entertainment with an estimated net worth of U.S. $250 million (or 250$ for those who speak French).
